Betancor Becomes Sixth Top Scorer for a Regional Team in Super League

As the regular season concludes, Betancor stands at the top of the scoring chart with 16 goals. This marks the first time a player from his team has achieved this feat and only the fifth instance where the title goes to a regional team. The first to break the dominance of Athens and Thessaloniki was Dimitris Papadopoulos from OFI, who scored 22 goals in the 1976-77 season. Indeed, he had tied at the top with Thanasis Intzoglou, who competed in the National team. In 1988-89, Imre Boda from Olympiacos Volou emerged as the top scorer with 20 goals, creating an upset. It took many years for another player from a regional team to reach the top, and Esteban Solar did it with Xanthi’s colors in 2013-14, scoring 16 goals, the same as Panthrakikos’ forward. Hermenegildo Barrales took the baton in 2014-15 and became the year’s top scorer with 17 goals in the Super League. The most recent on this list was Tom van Veert with Volos’ colors during the 2021-22 season, scoring 17 goals.
