Actor Ben Stiller has publicly criticized the Trump administration for using a clip from the 2008 satirical war comedy Tropic Thunder in an official White House video titled Justice the American Way. Posted on March 6, 2026, the video — released by the @WhiteHouse account — features a montage of Hollywood action and superhero films, including Braveheart, Top Gun, Superman, Transformers, Iron Man 2, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and the TV series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul.
‘War Is Not a Movie’
The clip in question shows Tom Cruise in heavy prosthetic makeup — a scene from Tropic Thunder that parodies Hollywood’s superficial engagement with war and trauma. Stiller, who co-wrote, directed, and starred in the film, responded directly on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Hey White House, please remove the Tropic Thunder clip. We never gave you permission and have no interest in being a part of your propaganda machine. War is not a movie.”
Stiller emphasized that neither he nor the film’s creators authorized the use of the footage and stressed their opposition to having the satire associated with what he described as the administration’s militarized messaging — particularly amid escalating tensions involving Iran.
The White House video, framed around the slogan “Justice the American Way,” appears designed to evoke themes of American strength and moral clarity. However, critics, including Stiller, argue that repurposing fictional, self-aware entertainment as political propaganda blurs critical lines between satire and state narrative — especially when real-world conflict is at stake.
