Barcelona: Heartbreaking Tribute to 6-Year-Old Hind from Gaza – Her Portrait Covers the Beach

Protesters unfurled a massive portrait of 5-year-old Palestinian Hind Rajab on a Barcelona beach, two years after her death in the Gaza war. Hind’s mother appealed to the international community to recognize the suffering of children in Gaza. Hind’s desperate cries for help—recorded while trapped in a vehicle under Israeli fire—were immortalized in the Oscar-nominated film ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab,’ which won the Silver Lion at Venice last year. During Israeli operations following Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack, Hind was trapped in a car for hours, pleading via phone for rescue as her aunt, uncle, and three cousins lay dead nearby. When an ambulance finally arrived, communication with Hind and rescuers was lost. Twelve days later, their bodies—including those of two ambulance crew members—were recovered. In Barcelona, hundreds held a 55-meter canvas bearing Hind’s face beside a large Palestinian flag and the message ‘Freedom for Gaza’s Children.’ ‘Gaza’s children don’t ask for pity—they demand their right to live, to sleep without fear, to play without bombs, to simply grow up,’ said Hind’s 29-year-old mother, Wesam Hamada. Jordanian-Canadian actress Sajja Kilarani—who portrays a Palestinian Red Crescent rescuer in the film—attended the beach protest, stating: ‘Hind Rajab’s voice didn’t stay in that car—it crossed borders.’ The Israeli military declined further comment on Hind’s death, saying the incident remains under investigation, and maintains it never intentionally targets civilians, blaming Hamas for using them as human shields.
