Bank Deposits Hit 15-Year High in Greece, Surging Over €80B Since 2019

Private sector deposits in Greek banks reached a new 15-year high of €213.2 billion in December, driven by robust economic performance and the Christmas bonus boost. According to the Bank of Greece, deposits rose by €9.4 billion year-on-year. Households accounted for over €154.8 billion — an increase of nearly €4.5 billion between December 2024 and December 2025. This marks the seventh consecutive month deposits exceeded €200 billion — the strongest showing since June 2010. Compared to early 2019 (€132.9 billion), deposits surged by approximately €80.3 billion — a 60.4% rise in just seven years. The rebound reflects growing confidence in Greece’s economic prospects and signals continued recovery from the crisis-era lows of €119 billion in February 2017. Additional support came from falling unemployment to 7.5% in December (ELSTAT), enabling more citizens to save regularly. Strong employment has helped sustain growth rates well above the eurozone average post-pandemic.
