Greece is at the heart of surging demand for autumn travel, with accommodation prices across Greek islands jumping by an eye-catching 131% — one of the steepest increases among European destinations, according to data presented at the 38th annual Virtuoso Travel Week conference.
Greece Among Top Performers — But Not Alone
This sharp rise follows an even more dramatic 179% price surge on the French Riviera, while Italy’s Puglia saw a 78% increase. The numbers underscore a broader shift: travelers are increasingly choosing the shoulder season not for lower costs, but for better weather, fewer crowds, and rich cultural programming — from food festivals to local harvest celebrations.
Autumn Takes Center Stage in 2026 Bookings
For 2026, the trend is unmistakable. Bookings for autumn months are up 59%, and sales have surged 69%. September leads the pack — with bookings rising 77% — followed by November and October. In Europe specifically, Virtuoso’s data suggests September may even outpace August in sales volume this year, marking a notable departure from traditional peak-season patterns.
Shorter Booking Windows, Smarter Timing
A parallel shift is underway in booking behavior. Across the OvationNetwork, the ‘booking window’ — the time between reservation and travel — has narrowed significantly for many autumn weekends, both domestically and internationally. Travelers are making decisions closer to departure dates, often targeting specific autumn weekends rather than planning far in advance.
From ‘Coolcation’ to ‘Fallcation’
What was once dubbed the ‘coolcation’ — a summer escape to cooler climes — is evolving into the ‘fallcation’: a deliberate, seasonally attuned travel choice. This new mindset reflects deeper appreciation for autumn’s unique appeal — milder temperatures, golden light, vibrant local life, and fewer logistical hurdles. The festive season is also gaining traction, with bookings for the holiday period rising 65%.
Collectively, these developments signal that global travel demand is no longer tightly bound to classic high-season months. Autumn is emerging as a strategic, high-value period for international tourism — and Greece, with its strong performance and growing allure, stands firmly among the top beneficiaries of this transformation.
