An autopsy on the water treatment works of Poniftis, which is a high risk point in the event of heavy rainfall, took place today, Monday (18.11. 24) the Regional Chief . Nikos Hardalia’s visit is part of the wider planning framework of the Region of Attica, with the aim of effectively implementing critical flood-proof projects to shield the Lekanopeion. During the autopsy, the Regional Chief found himself in the so-called “bridge, ” which unites the Municipality of Athens with the Municipality of New Philadelphia – New Chalcedon, which needs immediate intervention. The competent services of the Region have already initiated the study process in order to record the maintenance needs of the bridge and to determine precisely the extent of the interventions required. Upon completion of the study, the competition and auctioning of the project will be launched, which will be performed with the care of the Region. “We continue the barrage of our autopsies, in the cleaning works done in all the streams of the Lekanopei. We try with the means available to us, to intervene and to provide solutions wherever and whenever we can, even on matters that typically do not belong to our responsibilities. The issues of Municipalities should be dealt with not in terms of competence, but in terms of possibility,” Nikos Kardalias said. As he said, “we always aim for good cooperation with them, as well as with all the relevant bodies, in order to provide immediate and effective solutions to protect citizens. That is why we are also helping here on the bridge, in an extremely difficult task, which is not only about restoring it, but also about cleaning its prairies, which are in tragic condition, resulting in a problem in water supply.” “We continue by applying a holistic plan, we know what cleaning should do. In cooperation with the State, we proceed directly, within the first quarter of 2025, to auction 54 flood shield projects with guaranteed funding, either from regional money, or from co-responsible ministries from European and national financial protocols” he completed. For his part the Mayor of New Philadelphia – New Bronze Age Ioannis Tobuloglou said: “Our cooperation with the Region of Attica is flawless. In our capacity, we do what is required, to the maximum extent. The Region of Attica, since 19 September, has begun the cleaning of the ramps and the restoration of the two bridges of the region and we are moving on to the implementation phase of what is planned to be done.” The comprehensive plan drawn up by the Regional Authority for the protection of the Basin, against climate change and subsequent extreme natural phenomena, includes a total of 158 flood-proof projects, a total budget of EUR 1.2 billion. Of these, the 54 projects (budget of EUR 447.4 million) have a high maturity index and have been implemented since the first half of 2025, in order to be delivered by the end of the current term of office of the Regional Authority.
