The number of victims from Boris who hit eastern and central Europe with mourning the fifth dead from the floods rose. A woman’s body was found today in her flooded home in Austria from the bad weather Boris, police announced, raising to five the number of victims in the country and 19 overall in Europe. “A 81-year-old woman” died, said a spokesperson for Lower Austria police. A firefighter had lost his life Sunday, and yesterday (16.09.2024), Monday, the deaths of three men, aged 40–50, 70 and 80 were announced. The Boris storm has killed at least 19 people in central and eastern Europe: in addition to the five victims in Austria, Romania has so far recorded seven deaths, Poland four and the Czech Republic three as well as eight missing. Weather conditions may improve in many places, but the soil is flooded and the rivers are overflowing so the authorities are asking the population to continue to be very careful. In Austria, 26 villages remain excluded from the floods with the magnitude of the disaster being huge. Overall, the competent agencies carried out 33,000 rescue operations after the torrential rains and strong winds began on Friday (13.09.2024). In the Czech Republic more than 60,000 households remain without electricity, mainly in the northeastern part of the country. The largest rain retention basin, artificial Lake Rosberg (south), overflowed. The flood seems to be the worst in the region after the 2002 floods that had hit Prague, Dresden or Vienna, according to experts.
