For seven men and a 17-year-old boy, veteran broadcaster of Alan Jones is accused. According to the BBC, the 83-year-old broadcaster was detained in his apartment in Sydney, Australia early Monday morning (18.11.2024) for sexual abuse of a total of 8 people, as detectives from the New South Wales Police Police Abuse Group investigated his home and confiscated electronic devices. Jones is one of Australia’s top media leaders while in the past he denied the abuse charges, first published by The Sydney Morning Herald in 2023. This time, however, he faces 24 counts of incidents that took place between 2001 and 2019, including 11 counts of aggravated indecent attack. All charges, except two, are sexual offences. Police said some of the victims personally knew the radio producer and that at least one of them had hired him. He was granted conditional bail and will appear in court on December 18. Who is Alan Jones charged with sexual abuse of 8 people? Alan Jones was coach of the Australian national rugby team between 1984 and 1988, before a new radio career began. Also, at times, he worked as a speaker and advisor for Liberal Party officials – including former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser – and started several failed offers to represent the party in both state and federal politics. In 2012 Alan Jones became a headline because he argued that then Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s father “died of shame” and in 2019 faced a huge boycott by advertisers after saying that someone had to “screw a sock” in the neck of then New Zealand’s leader Jacinta Ardern. Jones has also been sued many times for slanderous libel. Information from BBC
