Attica Roots Festival 2026: Free Concerts in Athens

Attica Roots Festival 2026: Nine Free Open-Air Concerts from Sounio to Eleusis

—

in

A major celebration of music, memory, and contemporary creation comes to Attica with the Attica Roots Festival, running from 25 June to 25 July 2026. Organised by the Region of Attica, the festival features nine free concerts across iconic historical and cultural venues—from the Roman Agora and Cape Sounio to Eleusis, Drapetsona, the Zappeion, and central Athens squares.

A Living Musical Map Across History

The festival weaves together ancient sites and modern sound, transforming archaeological spaces, landmarks, and public squares into stages for a dynamic dialogue between past and present. Traditional Greek folk songs, rebetiko, Cretan melodies, Mediterranean rhythms, gypsy swing, jazz, funk, and electronica all find common ground—blending heritage with innovation in real time.

Featured Artists and Highlights

Among the performers are acclaimed voices and ensembles including Dimitra Galani, Turkish virtuoso Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Evanthia Remboutzika, Eleni Tsalgoupoulou, and the Cretan group Chainedes. Each concert is carefully placed to resonate with its location’s history and identity—whether it’s Byzantine chant echoing at Sounio, refugee and working-class memory honoured in Drapetsona, or Smyrneika and Constantinopolitan melodies performed at the Zappeion.
