Greece faces a challenging day today (July 4, 2025), with the risk of wildfires significantly elevated in several regions due to extreme heat and strong winds. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 38 degrees Celsius, combining with powerful gusts to create dangerous conditions across the country. Authorities have been placed on high alert, especially in areas under orange weather warnings, including Attica. According to the Fire Danger Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection under the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Friday sees an extremely high fire risk (Category 4) in the following regions:
– The Region of Attica (including the island of Kythira)
– Central Greece (specifically the regional unit of Evia)
– Peloponnese (Corinthia, Argolis, and Laconia regional units)
– Northern Aegean (Chios, Samos, and Ikaria regional units)
Meteorological forecasts indicate mostly clear skies nationwide, with locally high temperatures for this time of year. Cloud formations are expected to develop over mountainous inland areas during the hottest hours of the day. In Attica, temperatures will range from 27 to 35 degrees Celsius, with northeasterly winds reaching 3 to 5 Beaufort.
A new heatwave is expected to hit Greece starting next week, bringing even more intense conditions than previously recorded. Temperatures are projected to rise sharply from Sunday onward, potentially peaking between 41 and 43 degrees Celsius. This prolonged period of extreme heat, lasting at least five days, will further elevate the danger of wildfires. Meteorologist Yiannis Kallianos has warned that while temperatures may drop slightly after July 11, there will be a renewed increase in wind strength, maintaining the fire threat across multiple regions.
