The moment went viral after British animal rescuer Alexandra Ratliff — founder and director of McQueens Rescues, a small shelter on Crete — shared footage she filmed from her airplane window shortly after landing in Athens.
A Heartfelt Gesture Amidst Routine Work
Ratliff was accompanying several adopted cats on their journey from Crete to their new permanent homes on the mainland. As an island, Crete offers no overland transport option — meaning air travel was the only way. Though flying can be deeply stressful for animals, especially when placed in carriers in the cargo hold, this trip took an unexpectedly gentle turn.
As the luggage ramp lowered and the carriers rolled out one by one, Ratliff watched closely — and what she saw moved her profoundly. The employee carefully lifted each cat carrier, paused to gently greet the animal inside, and even stroked them through the bars. ‘It was such a sweet moment,’ she said. She originally posted the clip on TikTok in February hoping to identify and thank him — never expecting it would amass over 10 million views and more than 1.3 million likes.

Newsweek later identified the employee as 32-year-old Artsi Ardalis, originally from the Philippines, who works for the airline’s ground operations team at Athens Airport.
