At what age do young people in Europe leave their parental home?

On the occasion of International Youth Day, Eurostat is examining the average age at which young people leave their parental homes.

In 2020, across the EU, young people left their parents’ homes at an average age of 26.4. However, this average varies between the different EU Member States.

In most northern and western countries, young people left their homes on average in the early to mid-30s, while in southern and eastern countries the average age was in the late 20s or early 30s.

Sweden, Luxembourg, and Estonia recorded the smallest gender differences, with a difference of 0.1, 0.4, and 0.5 years respectively.
