Assassination Attempt on Colombian Presidential Candidate Miguel Uribe

Conservative senator Miguel Uribe, who has announced his intention to run for the presidency of Colombia in the 2026 elections, was shot in the head during an attack in Bogotá. His wife, Maria Clauda Tarason, stated that he is fighting for his life. Videos posted on social media show the 39-year-old politician delivering a speech during a pre-election event in a park in the Fontibon neighborhood of Bogotá when gunshots were heard. According to his party, the Democratic Center, armed individuals shot him from behind. Other images depict Uribe lying on the hood of a car, bleeding. The Democratic Center described the attack as serious but did not disclose details about Uribe’s health condition. Medical personnel reported that Uribe received two bullets in the head and one in the knee. Two people were injured in the attack, according to police. The alleged attacker, a minor, was also wounded in the leg by Uribe’s bodyguards and has been arrested. Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that authorities are investigating whether others were involved in the attack and offered approximately $730,000 for information regarding the case. The Colombian presidency condemned the violent attack, emphasizing it was not only against Uribe’s physical integrity but also against democracy and lawful political activity in Colombia. President Gustavo Petro expressed his condolences, urging respect for life. International figures, including U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio, condemned the assassination attempt.
