Art Vandalism: A Global Issue with Deep-Rooted Motives

Activists around the world are targeting major museums in various cities, throwing ketchup, oils, water, and chaining themselves in front of artworks to grab public attention for their causes—regardless of what those causes may be. They vandalize and exploit art as a vehicle to turn the spotlight on themselves without considering the practical and emotional consequences. Recently, a Greek Member of Parliament, who is also a doctor, father, and grandfather, took it upon himself to ‘protect’ children visiting an art gallery by defacing artwork. He justified his actions by claiming that he would similarly smash a TV if he found his child watching pornography. This lack of logic mirrors sentiments felt when witnessing the Taliban and Jihadists destroy ancient monuments. All these acts represent violence, hypocrisy, and a means to gain political leverage. The excuses and apologies no longer suffice; such actions reflect pettiness and authoritarian mindsets.
