Restoration work has begun on the apartment building in Thessaloniki where the Nestora family resides, following a series of arson attacks that shocked the city and resulted in the death of Vagia Nestora. The attacks—targeting homes of New Democracy (ND) officials—left not only a human tragedy but also serious damage to buildings and apartments across the city.
The Restoration Effort
The initiative was launched by the New Democracy party, with immediate focus on repairing damage caused by the fire at the building’s entrance, ground-floor parking area (pylota), and shared communal spaces. The effort carries strong symbolic weight: it signals solidarity with the Nestora family and other residents, while delivering tangible support in the wake of the fatal attack.
Timeline of the Attacks
In the early hours of Wednesday, three coordinated arson attacks struck locations in Thessaloniki: the home of ND MP Aphrodite Nestora; a residential building housing Zisis Ioakeimovits, chairman of ND’s Thessaloniki Executive Committee; and another building where former MP for Thessaloniki B, Savvas Anastasiadis, lives.
The first incident occurred at 04:18 in Pylaia, targeting properties linked to Ioakeimovits. At 04:23, attackers set fire to the entrance of Anastasiadis’ building, reportedly using gas canisters. The third attack took place at 04:35, targeting a vehicle parked in the pylota of the Nestora family’s apartment building.
Five people were injured in the attacks. Vagia Nestora—the mother of MP Aphrodite Nestora—suffered the most severe injuries and later died.
“We Are Not Afraid of You”
On Thursday afternoon, ND and ONNED members and supporters gathered outside the Hippokration Hospital in Thessaloniki to pay tribute to Vagia Nestora. Candles and her photograph were placed at the hospital entrance—the place where she took her last breath—and the central slogan of the gathering was “We are not afraid of you.”
A Delayed Farewell
Vagia Nestora’s funeral is scheduled to take place next week in Kozani. According to reports, the ceremony was postponed because her daughter, Aphrodite Nestora, is still undergoing medical recovery and is not yet able to travel. Once her condition permits, she will travel with her father to Kozani to bid farewell to her mother.
