A major arson attack using Molotov cocktails struck Thessaloniki in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 July 2026, targeting properties linked to members of the New Democracy party. The assault claimed the life of Vagia Nestora — mother of ND MP Aphroditi Nestora — and left four others injured, including the MP herself.

Victims and Injuries

The victims were rushed to hospital suffering from severe burns and respiratory distress caused by toxic fumes. Among them was Aphroditi Nestora, who remains hospitalized. Her mother, Vagia Nestora, died at the scene after a violent explosion occurred as they attempted to extinguish fires that had engulfed two parked vehicles and part of the building’s ground floor.

Surveillance Footage Points to Multiple Suspects

Investigators from Greece’s Anti-Terrorist Unit are reviewing extensive CCTV footage from the area. According to official sources, the recordings clearly capture the suspects’ movements before and after the attacks — and are considered critical to identifying those responsible.

Preliminary analysis suggests at least three individuals were involved, operating on two motorcycles. Two suspects reportedly rode together on one motorcycle and planted the incendiary devices at both attack sites — located roughly 200 metres apart. A third suspect, riding a second motorcycle, appears to have acted as a lookout or support operative. Authorities are also examining the possibility of a fourth person — possibly the driver of the support motorcycle — though no identification has been made yet.

Ongoing Investigation

Police continue collecting footage from local security cameras and interviewing eyewitnesses and residents to reconstruct the suspects’ timeline. Forensic experts are also analyzing remnants of the incendiary devices to determine whether they match materials used in previous attacks.

Motive Under Review

While no group has claimed responsibility, law enforcement sources indicate the attackers may be linked to anti-establishment or anarchist circles. The investigation remains active and highly sensitive.
