Avramopoulos Arrest Warrant in Qatargate Case

Arrest Warrant Issued for Dimitris Avramopoulos in Qatargate Probe

An arrest warrant has been issued against Greek MP Dimitris Avramopoulos by the Brussels public prosecutor’s office as part of the ongoing Qatargate investigation, according to information obtained by Greek judicial authorities.

Avramopoulos — a sitting New Democracy (ND) MP and former European Commissioner — is linked to the Qatargate scandal, though the warrant has not yet been executed. Due to his parliamentary immunity, the Hellenic Parliament must first vote to lift his immunity before any arrest can proceed.

According to sources, Avramopoulos is accused of participating in a criminal organization. Authorities reportedly associate his involvement with approximately €73,000 in financial benefit. On Monday, 22 June 2026, he appeared at the Athens Court of Appeal Prosecutor’s Office accompanied by his lawyer to be formally informed about the development.

The case is now expected to move into the parliamentary arena, as lifting immunity is a prerequisite for executing the warrant.

Speaking on the Live News programme on the evening of 22 June, journalist Christina Korai relayed Avramopoulos’s position: he asserts that his participation in the NGO Fight Impunity was fully authorized — receiving formal approval both from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the Commission’s Independent Ethical Committee. He also maintains that all fees received as an honorary member of the NGO’s board were duly declared to the relevant authorities and fully taxed.

Fight Impunity was founded by former Italian MEP Antonio Panzeri, who was implicated in the Qatargate scandal and later arrested — as was former European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili. The NGO reportedly received funding from Qatar. Avramopoulos had previously disclosed receiving €60,000 in fees from the organization between February 2021 and February 2022, and announced his resignation from its board shortly thereafter.

This latest development brings renewed attention to the corruption scandal that shook the European Parliament in 2022.
