In Preveza, law enforcement has apprehended a man involved in multiple phone scams targeting unsuspecting elderly individuals. He reportedly conned tens of thousands of euros, gold jewelry, and coins by pretending, through accomplices, to be a police officer. His latest attempt on Friday afternoon (May 2, 2025) failed when he tried to scam an elderly person out of 100,000 euros by falsely claiming their non-existent son had caused a serious car accident injuring a 14-year-old. The victim, suspicious of the scam, immediately alerted the authorities. Collaborating with the police, the elderly individual lured the scammer to a predetermined location where he was arrested by officers from the Preveza Crime Investigation Division. Upon his arrest, 500 euros and a mobile phone were seized. Investigations revealed that the suspect was involved in at least two more scams in Larissa over the past two months, totaling 51,450 euros, two gold coins, and valuable jewelry taken from elderly victims using the same method. Authorities continue investigating potential involvement in other fraud cases.
