The Ministry of Culture joins the program of their holistic promotion and the Museums of the Ancient Market and Kerameikos, the system of their active. The programme of fire protection of archaeological sites is a total budget of 6,500,000 euros. As Minister of Culture Lena Mendoni noted, the existing system of active fire protection does not cover the entire area of the archaeological site. It is already 20 years old and needs to be upgraded, in accordance with modern requirements to prevent and deal with fire. “The installation of modern active fire protection systems is considered of major importance for archaeological sites, taking into account the new data generated by the climate crisis, but also modern good practices,” he stressed and added that “the form and mode of operation of the system are appropriately adapted to the environment of archaeological sites, combining ensuring effective response, with minimal interference in the archaeological landscape and seamless view of monuments”. Ancient Market – Supreme Ice The implementation of the work of active fire protection of the archaeological site of the Ancient Agora, and the Areopagos, where the remains of Elefsinios in Ashi (Church dedicated to Dimitra) are included, arose due to increased fire risks due to the density of vegetation, which is exacerbated by drought. Please note that the site is adjacent to other important archaeological sites, such as the Acropolis and the Mousse-Nymphs Hills- Pnyx, as well as with urban groves, such as the Alsyllium of Thessios. Also welcomes this archaeological site, on a daily basis, a large number of visitors. A permanent water supply fire network will be installed in the organized and fenced archaeological site of the Ancient Market. A network of firefighting around the fence is installed, powered by the existing network of EYDAP, located near the park of Thessios. The main tube network will be overhead or where basement is required. At the archaeological site of the Areopagos, which is by a section of the fence and the rest open, 24 hours a day, for the public, two independent firefighting networks are provided, which are located around the fence and are also powered by the network of EYDAP. The old network, which is powered by the city network, will now serve only the needs for irrigation and watering the archaeological site. Archaeological site of Kerameikos The existing fire network of the archaeological site of Kerameikos consists of three fire nests fully equipped, a north of the museum, one on the fence of Piraeus Street, one against the Holy Road near Agia Triada, while a fourth is planned to be placed at the entrance to the archaeological site. At several points there are also wheeled fire extinguishers. A water launch system has recently been installed on the southern hill, while one is planned to be placed, still, on the prairie, along Ermou Street. Based on the new design, a firefighting network is installed around the fence, powered by the existing network of EYDAP. The network will feed the outer fire nests and automatic wetting networks, which are placed in selected locations. To warn the public, in the event of a fire in the two archaeological sites, they are placed inside the Stoa Attalou and the staff offices in Kerameikos, megaphone notification systems. The project includes the training of the personnel of archaeological sites in the use of new systems.
