Local society in Argos remains in shock following a violent police pursuit that ended with officers opening fire and critically wounding a 20-year-old man, who is now hospitalized on life support.
Officers Appear Before Prosecutor Amid Growing Scrutiny
The two officers from the Mobile Immediate Response Unit (OPKE) involved in the chase — which took place across multiple neighborhoods in Argos — appeared today (11.07.2026) before the investigating magistrate in Nafplio. They face charges of attempted homicide with possible intent, allegedly committed while in a calm mental state.
According to reports, the officers claim their shots were not aimed directly at the young man but were intended as warning fire to deter him. However, video evidence obtained and released by MEGA shows the moment officers open fire — seconds after sirens are heard — and the suspect collapses, gravely injured.
Chase Timeline and Critical Details
The pursuit began in the Pyrgela area and lasted approximately 35 minutes, winding through central Argos, Elliniko, the airport zone, Stathaiika, Monastiraki, and finally ending near a supermarket where the suspect’s vehicle was blocked by patrol cars.
After abandoning his car, the 20-year-old scaled a wall into an adjacent vacant lot containing an abandoned building. It was there that officers fired multiple rounds — at least 21, according to the MEGA footage — despite only 13 shell casings being recovered at the scene.
Medical Findings Raise Serious Questions
A medical report from the KAT General Hospital — where the young man was transferred after initial treatment at Thriasio Hospital — confirms the presence of a foreign object resembling a bullet lodged in his brain. This finding contradicts earlier suggestions of mere shrapnel injuries and underscores the urgency of ballistic analysis.
Authorities are now awaiting both the final forensic autopsy report and ballistic test results from the officers’ firearms to determine which officer fired the shot that struck the victim in the head.
Current Condition: Critically Unstable
The 20-year-old remains in critical condition at KAT Hospital. Medical staff describe his situation as extremely grave, with doctors reportedly stating he is “nearly brain-dead” as they continue efforts to sustain his life.
