Argos Police Shooting: Charges Upgraded Amid Ballistics Prob

Argos: Charges Against Two Police Officers Upgraded After 20-Year-Old’s Death – Ballistics Exam Under Scrutiny

The town of Argos is mourning 20-year-old Theodoris, who died after being shot in the head by police officers. The case has entered a new phase, with prosecutors expected to upgrade the charges against the two officers from involuntary manslaughter to premeditated homicide — potentially with evidence of intent.

The两名 officers are already in pre-trial detention at Korydallos Prison. According to the victim’s family’s lawyer, the investigating magistrate plans to proceed with formal indictment adjustments once the death certificate and ballistic examination are finalized — both key steps required to align the charges with newly uncovered forensic evidence.

A CT scan of the young man has revealed the severity of his cranio-cerebral injury, underscoring the lethal impact of the bullet. Meanwhile, an audio recording recently made public captures a rapid series of gunshots. Investigators report that the officers fired at least 21 times.

Ballistic analysis is now central to the investigation. Authorities have recovered 16 spent shell casings from two service weapons. Experts are now focused on identifying the specific bullet that caused the fatal wound. If forensic examination reveals signs of ricochet or deflection — such as striations consistent with surface impact — it could support the officers’ claim that they fired into the air. Conversely, absence of such markings would point toward a direct, aimed shot.

Greek Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis commented on the case, stressing that the Hellenic Police’s mandate is to apprehend suspects — not to take human life. He noted that weapon-use protocols were not properly followed in this instance. Separately, Argos-Mycenae Mayor Giannis Maltezos drew criticism for calling the officers’ pre-trial detention ‘excessive’ and suggesting that public attention may have influenced judicial decisions.
