Argolida: The Unique Greek Church Nested in a Natural Crater

Didyma is a plain in Argolida, located in the Peloponnese region of Greece. This village features two mysterious giant sinkholes resembling craters. These formations were not caused by volcanic activity as one might expect, but are instead dolines resulting from the subsidence of the ground due to underground water flow from the mountain. Both sinkholes have a circular shape and are visible from afar due to their immense size. One is situated at the foot of the mountain, called the ‘Great Cave,’ while the other lies in the plain and is known as the ‘Small Cave.’ Inside the Small Cave, which measures 80 meters deep and 150 meters in diameter, stands a unique little church where hundreds of pilgrims gather annually to celebrate Easter. The reason for this special church of Saint George is its location embedded within the rocky walls. Watch the video by Up Stories to explore this extraordinary church and experience the celebration of the Resurrection.
