Argentina: Two ex-servicemen convicted of raping political prisoners

Argentine justice on Friday sentenced two ex-servicemen to more than 20 years in prison for “aggravated rape” with the victims of three political prisoners held in a torture center in Buenos Aires during the dictatorship (1976-1983).

Former frigate captain Jorge “Tigre” Acosta, commander of the secret detention center, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Also, former security agent, Alberto “Gato” Gonzalez was sentenced to 20 years in prison at the end of the trial, which was held on camera, at the request of the victims.

These sentences were added to the life sentence already imposed on the two torturers, for a host of other human rights violations.

According to human rights groups, some 30.000 people have been forcibly disappeared during Argentina’s military dictatorship.
