Flight Instructor Jumps Mid-Flight in Argentina

Argentina: Flight Instructor Jumps from Plane Mid-Air, Leaving Student to Land Solo

—

in

An extraordinary and harrowing incident occurred in Argentina during a routine flight training session when the instructor—42-year-old Leandro Bertazzo—abruptly opened the door of a Cessna C-150 and jumped from the aircraft mid-flight, leaving his 22-year-old student pilot alone to land the single-engine plane.

Emergency Landing After Mid-Air Jump

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon, July 4, 2026, near the small town of Toledo in Córdoba Province. According to reports from the Daily Mail, the young woman—who holds a pilot’s license but has limited flight hours—said Bertazzo opened the window, removed his headset, organized his personal belongings—including his mobile phone—unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the cabin door (a notoriously difficult task in the Cessna model), and leapt out.

Despite the shock and urgency, she managed to safely land the Cessna C-150 at Coronel Olmedo Airport—the same airfield from which they had taken off moments earlier. She immediately contacted authorities after landing.

Body Recovered, Investigation Underway

Bertazzo’s body was found approximately 20 minutes later in a nearby field—the location the student had indicated as the likely point of impact. Argentine authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances and possible motives behind his death.

Colleague Describes a Seemingly Untroubled Man

Edgardo Álvarez, director of Flying Parrot Córdoba flight school—where Bertazzo had worked as an instructor for four years—spoke with local media about the student’s account. He described Bertazzo as ‘always smiling’ and said no one suspected he might take such a drastic step.

“At one point, Leandro told her: ‘You know what to do—keep going forward,’” Álvarez recounted. “He removed his headset, gathered his personal items, unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the door—and jumped out. She sent a message alerting others to the situation and proceeded to return to the runway for landing.”

Álvarez added: “He made this tragic decision inside an airplane with another person beside him. There’s no way to anticipate or fully understand it—but the human mind is so complex, so unpredictable. That’s why this happened.”

Possible Mental Health History

Local Argentine media report that Bertazzo had reportedly undergone neuropsychiatric treatment, though only his closest family members were aware of this prior to Saturday’s tragedy.
