Archaeologists Criticize Minister Mendoni for ‘Unbridled Autocracy and Workplace Bullying’

The Association of Greek Archaeologists has spoken out against what they describe as ‘unbridled autocracy and workplace bullying’ by the Ministry of Culture. This criticism follows an intense exchange between Alkestis Papadimitriou, the head of the Argolid Antiquities Ephorate, and Minister Lina Mendoni during a site visit in Argos regarding restoration works. The minister reportedly expressed frustration over the dilapidated state of a building, questioning why it had not been repaired despite receiving millions in funding. Papadimitriou responded that repairs were cost-prohibitive at €45,000. The incident, captured on video, highlights growing tensions within the ministry and raises concerns about workplace dynamics. According to the archaeologists’ association, similar or worse incidents occur regularly during official meetings with the minister’s office. Instead of apologizing, the ministry has attempted to frame the event as justified criticism against an allegedly incompetent employee. The association argues this narrative is misleading, emphasizing that funds mentioned by the minister are exclusively allocated for specific projects under strict guidelines. They call for accountability from both parties involved and highlight broader issues within public administration. Furthermore, the association stresses its stance aims to protect the dignity and integrity of the archaeological profession rather than defend any individual.
