An unthinkable tragedy unfolded in Thessaloniki as the mother of New Democracy (ND) official Aphrodite Nestora died hours after a terrorist arson attack on the family’s home. The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from across the political spectrum and placed the circumstances of the attack at the center of an urgent investigation by Greek authorities.
Severe Injuries and Fatal Outcome
The 70-year-old woman was rushed to the intensive care unit of Thessaloniki’s Hippokration Hospital with severe, full-body burns sustained during the attack. Despite emergency treatment, she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, 1 July 2026.
Coordinated Arson Attacks
The firebombing targeted three residences in Thessaloniki simultaneously: that of Aphrodite Nestora, a member of ND’s national leadership; Zisis Ioakimovits, president of ND’s Thessaloniki governing committee; and Savvas Anastasiadis, former MP for Thessaloniki B constituency. According to preliminary findings, attackers used gas lighters — commonly known as ‘gazakis’ — to ignite the fires.
Timeline and Investigation
Authorities estimate the attacks occurred between 4:18 a.m. and 4:35 a.m., within a tight 17-minute window. A specialized unit from the Directorate for Combating Special Violent Crimes (DAEEB) immediately took charge of the pre-trial investigation. Investigators collected witness statements from local residents and reviewed security camera footage from the affected neighborhoods.
Injuries and Suspects
In total, five people were injured — most suffering respiratory complications due to smoke inhalation. While no suspects have been publicly identified, authorities believe more than two individuals were involved in carrying out the coordinated assaults.
