Aphrodite Nestora, a New Democracy (ND) lawyer and politician, has been hospitalized since Monday, 6 July 2026, at the Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery Clinic of the Papageorgiou Hospital in Thessaloniki. She sustained extensive burns during an arson attack on the apartment building where she resides in Thessaloniki. The explosion occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 1 July 2026, claiming the life of her mother, Vagia Nestora, and leaving Aphrodite with serious injuries.
Medical Team Opposes Discharge for Funeral
According to hospital sources, Nestora’s recovery remains a long and delicate process — her doctors emphasize that “she still has a long road ahead” before her burns fully heal. Treating physicians are firmly opposed to her discharge in order to attend her mother’s funeral in Kozani on Thursday, 9 July 2026.
Newsit.gr reports that the medical team is scheduled to hold another evaluation meeting tomorrow, 8 July 2026, to assess whether — and under what strict conditions — a brief, time-limited transfer might be permitted. A standard discharge is considered highly unlikely. However, it cannot be ruled out that, if her condition allows and assuming full personal responsibility, she may travel for a few hours to Kozani via private car or private ambulance.
A Public Farewell Amid Recovery
Even as she battles her injuries in hospital, Nestora announced her mother’s funeral details on social media. The memorial service for Vagia Nestora will take place on Thursday, 9 July 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at the Holy Church of Agios Nikolaos in Kozani, followed by burial at the Agios Georgios Cemetery in Kozani. In line with the family’s wishes, donations to the ‘Vision of Hope’ Association are requested instead of floral wreaths.
