Nikos Androulakis, President of PASOK – Movement of Change, has strongly criticized the government following Egypt’s decision to seize the property and immovable assets of the historic Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai. According to Androulakis, the Egyptian authorities’ unilateral decision to alter the legal status and operation of the monastery, along with the expropriation of its property and expulsion of monks, raises serious concerns. This action is seen as a direct challenge to the religious freedom of Orthodox Christians and an affront to a UNESCO World Heritage site. Androulakis accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of being deeply exposed once again, particularly for the lackluster response to the breach of mutual Greece-Egypt commitments negotiated at a high level involving the Prime Minister himself. He warned that this incident highlights the diminishing diplomatic influence of Greece in the broader region, even with friendly nations like Egypt. Androulakis called on the government to immediately intensify and effectively deploy its diplomatic efforts bilaterally and multilaterally to protect the monastery as a symbol of peaceful coexistence among religions and cultures.
