At a commemorative event marking 30 years since the death of Andreas Papandreou — founding leader of PASOK — party president Nikos Androulakis paid tribute to his legacy in Kalentzi, Achaea. ‘Andreas Papandreou is Greece’s great absence — yet he remains constantly present: present in our nation’s major democratic achievements; present in the collective memory of the Greek people; and present in the struggles of our own generation, which seeks answers in a world marked by insecurity, inequality, and uncertainty,’ Androulakis said.

A Living Legacy

Speaking at the event organized by PASOK to honour its founder, Androulakis stressed that ‘it is our duty to make democracy genuinely dangerous again for entrenched powers — whether economic, media-based, or those seeking to undermine the rule of law and democratic institutions, just as Andreas taught us.’

He described Papandreou’s legacy as a source of inspiration for today’s demands: a more equal society; a robust public health and education system; a rule-of-law state that ends arbitrary exercise of power; greater social justice; and unwavering national dignity. ‘This is what the Greek people thirst for,’ he added.

Androulakis noted that Papandreou continues to inspire not only those who lived through the transformative ‘Change’ governments of the 1980s, but also younger generations who never met him personally. ‘Great leaders do not belong solely to their era — their legacy is timeless, illuminating the needs, aspirations, and struggles of every new generation.’

Memory of the Future

‘That is why Andreas remains present — not as a nostalgic relic of a glorious past, but as a memory of the future: a compass for all who still believe politics can offer hope and change the lives of ordinary people. These are the principles we serve today. This is the cause for which PASOK fights — alongside every democratic citizen,’ he said.

He distilled Papandreou’s life path into three words: Analysis, Action, Transcendence — reflecting how, through the difficult path of struggle and democratic socialism, Papandreou united diverse democratic forces: the Venizelist tradition, Resistance fighters, the generation of 1 January 1944, the Polytechnic uprising, and the anti-dictatorship movement.

Change Was More Than a Victory

‘The Change governments achieved a multifaceted transcendence. Because “Change” was never merely an electoral victory — it was the entry of broad social forces onto history’s main stage. Andreas gave real substance to concepts that had previously remained empty slogans: social justice, popular participation, national dignity,’ Androulakis emphasized.

He underscored a defining truth: ‘The people do not forget — PASOK was, truly, the first time the Left came to power in Greece.’
