Political figures and members of Andreas Papandreou’s family gathered today (23 June 2026) at Athens’ First Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of the founding leader of PASOK and former Prime Minister of Greece.

A Unified Presence at the Tomb

Nearly the entire PASOK parliamentary group attended the memorial, led by party president Nikos Androulakis. Among those present were prominent and historic figures of the party, including Costas Skandalidis, Anna Diamantopoulou, Nadiya Giannakopoulou, Pavlos Christidis, and Tonia Antoniou.

An Emotionally Charged Gathering

The atmosphere was deeply emotional, with memories of Papandreou’s political legacy dominating the occasion. Immediately after the ceremony, informal clusters formed around the tomb—often referred to locally as “little wells”—where MPs and party officials engaged in extended conversations about the charismatic founder of the movement.

Legacy and Leadership

Discussions centred on the importance of preserving historical memory—and, more significantly, on Papandreou’s enduring political legacy. Many emphasized that his vision remains vital and continues to guide Greece’s progressive political forces into the future.

Before departing, Androulakis and all attendees paid tribute by placing a single flower on Papandreou’s grave—the man whose leadership helped define post-dictatorship Greece.

“Andreas Papandreou was a global leader and intellectual,” said Anna Diamantopoulou shortly after the ceremony concluded. “But what generations will remember him for is how he brought Greece—long relegated to the margins—into the centre of international attention and transformed its social balances. He opened opportunities and changed the landscape for everyone.”
