«Anaphylactic shock from antibiotic» killed the 28-year-old pregnant woman in Arta – Hospital statement

A 28-year-old pregnant woman, mother of a two-year-old child, died in Arta after suffering an anaphylactic shock following the administration of an antibiotic. The General Hospital of Arta has released an official statement on the tragic incident. On Sunday evening (28.09.2025) at 11:20 PM, the woman arrived at the outpatient clinic of the Obstetrics-Gynecology Department, reporting vaginal bleeding and being in her sixth week of pregnancy. During examination, blood was detected in the vagina, leading to her hospitalization. An antibiotic was administered, after which she suffered a severe allergic reaction resulting in anaphylactic shock. Medical staff immediately performed CPR, intubated her, and transferred her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite intensive efforts, she passed away. The hospital administration has ordered an immediate internal investigation (EDE) to determine the exact causes of death for both the woman and her unborn child. According to the hospital’s statement: ‘The patient, aged 28, presented with acute vaginal bleeding (threatened miscarriage) at six weeks gestation. Following clinical assessment, she was admitted for pharmacological treatment. During antibiotic administration, she developed an anaphylactic shock. Resuscitation measures were initiated, but unfortunately, she did not survive.’ Michalis Giannakos, President of POEDIN, described the event as a tragedy: ‘It’s shocking—two lives lost at the Arta hospital.’ He added that due to lack of ICU availability, the patient was initially taken to a post-operative recovery room before being moved to the ICU the next morning. By early Wednesday, she had developed multi-organ failure and cardiac arrest. The ongoing investigation will examine all aspects of the antibiotic administration and hospital procedures.
