In a letter sent to President Donald Trump, the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) has urged the administration to maintain CAATSA sanctions and prevent Turkey’s reintegration into the F-35 program. The AHI strongly opposes Ankara’s return to the F-35 fighter jet program, even if Turkey decides to abandon its Russian S-400 missile system, which initially triggered CAATSA sanctions. Following reports that the U.S. government might consider compromise solutions regarding the S-400 issue, including partial decommissioning or relocating the system to an American military base in Turkey, AHI emphasizes that Turkey’s behavior remains fundamentally opposed to U.S. interests. The institute argues that Turkey should remove the S-400 system not for bargaining leverage but due to its obligations toward the U.S. and NATO. Allowing Turkey back into the F-35 program without addressing past transgressions could send the wrong message and risk further misuse of American technology. Furthermore, Turkey’s continued aggressive actions against U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), support for designated terrorist organizations like Hamas, and human rights violations make it unfit for receiving advanced weaponry or having sanctions lifted.
