Amazon: Investments in 3 new renewable energy projects in Greece

Investment in three new renewable projects in Greece announced today (4.2.2020) or , raising to eight the total number of energy supply agreements (PPAs) signed in the country. As indicated by Amazon in its Communication, these projects are part of the wider effort to invest in new, carbon-free energy sources, supporting the Climate Pledge initiative through which the company commits to achieving zero carbon emissions throughout its activity by 2040. CORVERSE The power of the units is 657 MW without coal, corresponding to the equivalent for electricity of 330,000 Greek households . “The Amazon commits to promote the transition to energy without coal for both our activities and local communities where our customers live and work,” said Thanasis Patsakas, Country Manager of Amazon Web Services (AWS). “That is why we are proud to support eight wind and solar energy agreements in Greece to date, making Amazon the leading corporate renewable energy buyer in Greece and throughout Europe in 2024”. Amazon’s recent agreements include Elzet solar station and Menelou wind park, owned by Greenvolt Energias Renovaveis, a renewable energy project development company based in Portugal. Elzet solar station is located in the region of Thessaly while Menelou wind park is located in the region of Western Greece. Hellas Green solar station, developed by Luxcara is located in Western Macedonia. In 2024 Amazon announced corresponding agreements for Vermio wind park in Western and Central Macedonia as well as wind parks in the Mesotopfi and Kouuras regions in the Peloponnese. These projects are expected to start energy production in 2026. Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodore Skylakakis, said: “Greece, by its nature, has a valuable tool for achieving energy transition, Renewable Energy Sources (RES). Amazon, with its decision to invest once again in our country in three new RES projects – namely Thessaly, Western Greece and Western Macedonia – is instrumental in achieving this national objective. Initiatives such as this, for further penetration of RES into our electricity system, lead to significant benefits for local communities: New jobs are being created, while households are gaining access to cheap electricity. For our part, in the Greek Government, in order to achieve the further penetration of RES, we take all necessary steps to keep this market healthy, in the present, demanding phase of energy transition.”
