This latest incident has heightened alarm, coming just days after another gas-canister attack on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, targeting the home of Aphrodite Nestor. That assault involved two explosions which killed her mother, Vagia, and injured Aphrodite as well as other residents.
Rising fear over repeated attacks
Gas-canister attacks have become an increasingly frequent and alarming phenomenon in the region. Over the past three years, authorities have made more than 150 arrests linked to such devices — underscoring a growing sense of insecurity among local residents.
Speaking to ilialive.gr, several locals described hearing the explosion and rushing outdoors in panic — initially mistaking it for a heavy vehicle crash, given the frequency of traffic accidents on nearby Evangelistria Street. What they found instead shocked them further: flames engulfing the building’s entrance and a scene resembling a warzone.
Details of the device and damage
According to police investigators, the explosive device consisted of three gas canisters and a gasoline-filled jerrycan, placed deliberately at the building’s entrance. The blast shattered windows in the targeted apartment block and nearby buildings. Fortunately, despite extensive property damage, no injuries were reported.
Police responded immediately upon being alerted. Their first priority was to identify and review any available security camera footage that might help identify the perpetrators. A second line of inquiry focuses on whether this attack is connected to recent incidents — possibly indicating a retaliatory motive.
