The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy has taken action to relieve the Port Authority official following a serious incident in the harbor of Alonnisos. During the boarding of passengers onto a vessel, a cable snapped, causing panic and endangering both passengers and crew. The incident drew strong reaction from Maritime Affairs Minister Vasilis Kikilias, who described the event as “extremely dangerous” in a public online post. “I am absolutely clear: there is zero tolerance on safety issues,” he emphasized. An investigation under oath has been ordered by the minister through the Chief of the Port Police – Hellenic Coast Guard, Antinarchos Tryfon Kontizas, to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and assign responsibility where appropriate. This order also covers another serious incident on April 30 involving a vessel on the Syros-Piraeus route when a crew member was ejected while at sea, posing significant risks to ship and passenger safety. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs assures that all necessary measures will be taken against any responsible parties and reiterates that maritime transport safety remains an unwavering priority.
