Almost €1.2 Million Seized in Evros by Greek Customs – ‘Ant Method’ Attempt Foiled

in

The sum of €1,192,000 was detected and secured by customs officers at the Kastanies border checkpoint in Evros, Greece. During a routine inspection of a vehicle entering Greece from a neighboring country, customs officers from the AADE (Greek Independent Authority for Public Revenue) discovered the money on three Greek female passengers. The cash was meticulously hidden in specially designed belts strapped around their bodies—a method commonly referred to as the ‘ant method.’ Following the seizure, an investigation is underway by the Authority for Combating Money Laundering to determine the source of the funds. If no link to illegal activities is found, AADE will retain 25% of the amount and return the remaining 75% to the owners. This incident marks the second-largest cash seizure by AADE since they confiscated €2,281,000 on August 14, 2016, at Athens International Airport ‘Eleftherios Venizelos’.
