Residents of Mesochori in southern Evia, particularly those living in the area of Tsakaios, are facing a grueling night as the wildfire that broke out yesterday afternoon (July 4, 2025) continues to rage out of control. Despite heroic efforts by firefighters and volunteers, flames have reached dangerously close to homes in this semi-mountainous village.
The fire, which is spreading rapidly due to strong winds, has engulfed the surrounding areas of Mesochori and Tsakaios near Karystos, growing to massive proportions. Flames now threaten residential zones, while thick smoke blankets the entire region, creating suffocating conditions.
Reinforcements from Central Greece and Thessaly have brought the firefighting forces to 112 firefighters, supported by five ground crews, 32 vehicles, and local volunteers. Ground teams continue relentless operations after aerial support was temporarily suspended due to operational limits. However, powerful winds are making containment increasingly difficult.
Emergency services remain on high alert, monitoring the fire’s movement minute-by-minute and coordinating protective measures for residents. Firefighting efforts are currently concentrated southwest of Tsakaios, where wind conditions are intensifying the blaze. The scenes on the ground are harrowing—flames bursting through darkness, choking air, and emergency personnel working non-stop to protect lives and property.
Local authorities have placed municipal facilities on standby for temporary housing if evacuations become necessary. As the night unfolds, uncertainty remains high, with no sign of wind abatement or containment.
