Alimos: The 3 Questions Authorities Must Answer About the Baby Found in Trash Bins

in

On Wednesday afternoon (May 14, 2025), a baby’s cry was heard beneath branches among trash bins in Alimos. A shocked woman discovered an abandoned infant just months old and immediately informed the police. Just hours earlier, a 43-year-old Romani woman had approached the Acropolis police station claiming that a man approached her at a supermarket asking her to buy(!) the baby. When she refused, the man allegedly took the child and ran. However, it was later confirmed that the woman is the grandmother of the baby found in Alimos.

Authorities have evidence suggesting that no abduction occurred. Witnesses reported seeing the woman with a man holding the baby inside a store. “Around 1:40 PM, the woman entered the store with the man and the baby, went upstairs, picked up some items, and proceeded to the checkout. The man held the baby in his arms, left the store, and walked away normally,” witnesses noted, adding that the woman later searched for them.

Now, authorities are reviewing security footage to answer these key questions:
– Was there really a man who abducted the baby inside the supermarket?
– How did the baby end up in Alimos?
– Who left the baby in the trash bin?

Officials suspect the baby may have been a victim of human trafficking, but something went wrong, leaving the baby wrapped in branches among garbage bins. The baby is currently healthy and has been transferred via ambulance to Agia Kyriakou Children’s Hospital for further examinations. Security cameras from both the supermarket in Omonia and surrounding streets, as well as the location where the baby was found in Alimos, are being reviewed.
