A letter from the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah, was delivered by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during a meeting in Moscow. In his letter, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei requests support from Vladimir Putin following recent attacks on Iran by Israel and the U.S. Tehran appears dissatisfied with Russia’s stance and urges Putin to strengthen his position in favor of Iran against Israel and the United States. Iranian sources mentioned that the specific type of assistance sought by Tehran remains undisclosed. Russia, a long-time ally of Tehran, plays a role in nuclear negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program with the West as a member of the UN Security Council with veto power and as a signatory to a previous nuclear agreement abandoned by Trump in 2018. Putin has expressed intentions to mediate between the U.S. and Iran. Russia and Iran signed a strategic partnership earlier this year. Additionally, Iran supplied Russia with unmanned aircraft for its war against Ukraine.
