Alexis Tsipras has announced the composition of his new shadow cabinet under the newly formed Greek Left Coalition (ELAS), drawing on expertise from academia, local government, the judiciary, the armed forces, the private sector, and public administration.

A Symbolic Choice for Justice

Former Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Greece, Maria Lepenioti, takes charge of the Justice, Institutions, and Rights portfolio—a move widely seen as symbolic, given her prominent role in the landmark trial of the far-right Golden Dawn party.

Military and Civic Leadership

Christos Christodoulou, former Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff during SYRIZA’s government, leads the Defence portfolio. Meanwhile, Marinos Skandamis assumes responsibility for Citizen Protection—just days after leaving PASOK.

Strong Local Government Representation

Giorgos Ioakeimidhis, mayor of Nikaia–Rentis for nearly three decades, heads the Local Government portfolio, with former Larissa mayor Apostolos Kalogiannis serving as his deputy. Maria Kamma, former mayor of Tilos, oversees Island Policy.

A New Generation—and a Social Media Voice

Among the notable appointments is farmer and trade unionist Thomas Moschos—known for his active presence on TikTok—who takes on the Agriculture Development portfolio. Also joining the team is lawyer Argyris Benteniotes, son of former PASOK minister Manolis Benteniotes, who serves as deputy sector head for Development and Entrepreneurship.

Broad Expertise Across Sectors

Tsipras’s team includes university professors, former senior judges, civil service officials, internationally recognized scholars, and representatives from the real economy—all part of an effort to present a comprehensive alternative governance platform and signal readiness for government responsibilities.
