In a sharp critique of the current government’s handling of Greek-U.S. relations, Alexis Tsipras — leader of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (ELAS) and former Greek prime minister — told Politico that Athens is effectively issuing a ‘blank check’ to the United States and to former U.S. President Donald Trump. Tsipras argued that bilateral ties should be grounded in mutual benefit, not unconditional accommodation.
A Sovereign Defense Policy
He voiced strong opposition to the agreement granting long-term U.S. military access to Greek defense installations, stressing that national defense needs must take clear priority over unqualified compliance with American demands.
A Contrast with Spain
Tsipras drew a comparison with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, citing Spain’s greater autonomy in recent foreign policy decisions amid unfolding developments in the Middle East.
Policy Priorities Ahead of Elections
Looking ahead to elections expected by spring 2027, Tsipras outlined core pillars of his platform: strengthening European Union political cohesion; reducing regional inequalities; and increasing the EU’s own resources — notably through higher taxation on multinational corporations and carbon emissions.
On European defense, he affirmed the necessity of boosting defense spending but warned it must not come at the expense of social policy. Such trade-offs, he cautioned, risk fueling far-right political forces across the continent.
Corruption as an ‘Invisible Tax’
Tsipras described corruption in Greece as an ‘invisible tax’ on citizens — siphoning off vital public and EU funds from healthcare, education, and the welfare state. He linked the country’s high cost of living to a system that, in his view, disproportionately burdens Greek households.
He acknowledged widespread public discontent with the current administration but attributed its failure to translate into a strong alternative to the fragmentation of the opposition — a challenge he believes ELAS is uniquely positioned to address.
Defending His 2015 Term
In response to ongoing criticism of his 2015–2019 premiership, Tsipras noted that public debate often focuses narrowly on the first months of his term. He emphasized that his government ultimately completed all bailout adjustment programs, stabilized the economy, and set Greece back on a path of sustainable growth.
