Alexandroupoli: Soufli Hit Hardest by Storm – Road Network Open in Evros

Yesterday’s (29.01.2026) severe weather caused widespread damage in Soufli, Evros, with particularly difficult conditions in several areas. According to Soufli Mayor Panagiotis Kalakikos, the storm damaged water supply networks, cut off water to settlements including Mandras, Lykophis, and Lagynon, forced school closures, and damaged roads. For safety reasons, all schools in the municipal community of Dereio are closed today due to flooded access routes to and from Mikro Dereio, rendering travel unsafe. Municipal teams are working urgently to restore water supply infrastructure. In Alexandroupoli, the Anthia kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, as well as the Apalou kindergarten and primary school, remain closed due to heavy rainfall and safety concerns for students, parents, and staff. Meanwhile, road traffic across the entire Orestiada municipality network is operating normally today—though it was disrupted yesterday by debris carried by flash floods. The Irish-style crossings at Rizion and Kastaneon remain closed.
