An alarm was triggered at the Areios Pagos — Greece’s Supreme Court — on the afternoon of Thursday, 23 July 2026, following reports of smoke emanating from the building’s basement. Fire service units responded promptly amid growing concern among staff and officials.
Five fire engines and 12 firefighters arrived at the site to conduct inspections and locate the source of the smoke. According to official information, the alarm was deactivated shortly thereafter. The smoke was traced to a backup generator that had automatically activated following a power outage affecting the building.
The power supply to the courthouse was interrupted, and the smoke appeared to originate near electrical transformers located in the basement area.
