“My father suffered his first stroke at the age of 42. I was only 5, and my brother was 8. Our mother was 35. I still remember the words of the doctor who saved him: ‘Vasili, you fell from the white tower, stood up straight, and found a treasure.’ So serious was the stroke, and so lucky was he—and we with him,” wrote Akis Skertzos in his post. “He survived, thanks to his careful lifestyle and the care of our mother, another severe heart attack that he suffered 16 years later, but unfortunately, we lost him in 2009 due to the fatal rupture of his heart. His absence still hurts me, and I deeply regret that my son, who looks so much like him and bears his name, never got to know him. The two of them would have shared so much,” Skertzos added.
“Just received this message from EOPYY about my own preventive cardiovascular examinations, and my thoughts immediately went to you, dad… Many things could have been different for all of us—for my family too—if our country had invested earlier in prevention. We’re doing it now, albeit with great delay.”
“Take advantage of this great gift. Get the preventive tests offered free by the state. A state that must care for and protect its citizens. This is what we need. For this, we work,” concludes Skertzos in his post.
