Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, has shared his harrowing story. The 40-year-old British national described his miraculous escape as a ‘miracle,’ considering the tragic death toll of 270 people. Vishwash, a father of one, was seated in seat 11A when the plane crashed almost immediately after landing, destined for Gatwick Airport in London.
Deeply saddened by the loss of his brother Ajay, who was seated in 11J and perished in the disaster, Vishwash expressed his grief to the UK’s ‘The Sun.’ He recounted how he had initially planned to book adjacent seats but missed the opportunity due to delays in reservations. This decision inadvertently separated them during the tragedy.
‘If we had sat together, maybe both of us would have survived,’ Vishwash lamented. ‘I tried to go back into the burning wreckage to save my brother, but emergency services stopped me.’
Footage captured him attempting to re-enter the aircraft amidst flames, pleading with rescuers to let him save Ajay. Despite suffering minor injuries, Vishwash attended his brother’s funeral in western India, honoring his memory.
The incident occurred in a densely populated area of Ahmedabad, claiming the lives of 241 passengers and crew members, along with 30 individuals on the ground. Investigations are ongoing into the cause of the crash, while concerns about Boeing 787 quality issues resurface following whistleblower warnings in 2024.
