Almost a month after a mother and her son were found dead inside their home in Aigio, Greece’s FBI-style investigative unit is now seriously considering the possibility that the case is not a double homicide—but rather the murder of the 26-year-old son and the suicide of his 54-year-old mother.
Forensic Findings Raise Questions
According to a report by Live News, autopsy findings show no signs of third-party involvement in the chilling incident at the Loggos neighborhood in Aigio. Notably, photographs from the autopsy reveal no wound on the woman’s back—contrary to an initial observation by the forensic pathologist from Patras. Instead, injuries on her wrists appear consistent with older self-harm incidents, potentially linked to prior suicide attempts.
Grandmother’s Statement Adds Complexity
The victim’s grandmother told Live News she finds it inconceivable that the mother would have killed her son: “There’s no way she would have harmed him—he was her whole world. She was completely devoted to him.” She believes the deaths are the result of an unsolved double homicide—and points to financial motives. She claims the suspect—a 65-year-old Italian man—became aware the house was legally registered in her grandson’s name (having been transferred by the grandparents), and that tensions escalated when he realized he had no legal claim. “The Italian had invested money into the property, discovered it was in the boy’s name, and they argued. He killed the boy—only while he was asleep,” she said.
Where the Investigation Stands Now
Authorities stress that the probe remains ongoing. Key forensic results—including DNA analysis of bloodstains found throughout the home—are still pending. Investigators have also collected multiple pieces of evidence and interviewed numerous individuals who knew the family. Several witnesses—including the murdered man’s girlfriend and one of his closest friends—confirmed the Italian man’s claims about the mother’s psychological struggles. Both women added that the 26-year-old had been visibly distressed in the days before his death, overwhelmed by the deteriorating atmosphere at home.
What Initially Led to the Suspect’s Arrest
After the deaths, the 65-year-old Italian man claimed he had been asleep until 11 a.m., waking to find both victims dead. The first officer on the scene described finding the 54-year-old woman lying face-down just behind the front door, her nightgown unbuttoned, with over 20 stab wounds to her chest and abdomen. That description—combined with the initial forensic reference to a wound on her back—initially supported suspicions of a violent assault and led directly to his arrest.
