In a tragic turn of events just minutes before midnight on Saturday, a car crash near Agrinio left a 21-year-old driver burned beyond recognition while his 17-year-old passenger miraculously survived. According to the girl’s father, speaking to newsit.gr, his daughter was experiencing severe abdominal pain and was being driven to the hospital by the deceased driver, Thanasakis.

“My daughter had stomach pains and called me saying that Thanasakis would bring her to the hospital,” the father recounted. He immediately headed to the medical facility, only to receive an SMS from emergency services stating that his daughter had been involved in a traffic accident.

The collision occurred near the Polyclinic High School of Agrinio. The 21-year-old’s vehicle was moving towards Agrinio, while the van it collided with was heading in the opposite direction toward Amfilochia. Authorities are now investigating whether another vehicle played a role in the incident.

Eyewitnesses claim that a car behind the van executed a dangerous overtaking maneuver, which may have startled the young driver. “The van was ahead, but a car dangerously overtook it. It seems like the kids panicked or hit the brakes and lost control,” the father explained. “It’s even possible that this car grazed them, causing the crash. My daughter said that a car came straight at them.”

Both the survivors in the van and the 17-year-old girl reported seeing the same vehicle flee the scene. However, identifying the car remains difficult as the area is poorly lit and although there are surveillance cameras, they may not provide clear footage.

The local police have begun collecting testimonies and reviewing available CCTV footage to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to this heartbreaking tragedy.
