In a solemn and emotionally charged extraordinary session held on the afternoon of Tuesday, 25 August 2026, the Municipal Council of Agia Varvara paid tribute to Dimitris Kokotas, a beloved municipal councilor who passed away following a prolonged illness. The council convened specifically to approve a unanimous resolution mourning his death — a gesture described in official documents as ‘a sign of mourning and a minimal tribute of respect.’
The meeting, attended by 14 of the council’s 25 members, took place under lowered municipal flags and was presided over by Mayor Lampros Michos, following an official invitation from Council President Vassilios Vossos. Kokotas had been elected to the council in the 2023 local elections and served diligently until 28 March 2024, when he fell seriously ill and was hospitalized.
In the resolution introduced by Mayor Michos and adopted without dissent, Kokotas was remembered as ‘a rare personality who honored our municipality and our Municipal Council.’ The text highlighted his integrity, generosity, talent, grace, and visionary outlook — qualities that earned him deep affection across the community. ‘He loved Agia Varvara and its people, and they loved him unreservedly in return,’ the resolution stated.
Under Decision No. 74, the council approved nine formal measures, including: observance of one minute of silence; full municipal coverage of funeral expenses in accordance with current law; the municipal flag flown at half-mast until the day of burial; full attendance by the council — led by its president and the mayor — at the funeral service; official wreath-laying; establishment of an annual scholarship at the municipality’s music school in Kokotas’ name; renaming the main event hall at the ‘Mitros Soulimiotis’ Cultural Centre in his memory; postponement of all scheduled September cultural events until after the 40-day memorial period; and official delivery of the resolution to his family, publication on the municipality’s website, and dissemination through the press.
