Turkey’s Ministry of Culture has begun to clean the basements of Agia Sofia in Istanbul – which has knownly turned into a mosque – with the aim of opening for visitors. CORVERSE According to the Turkish newspaper “Yeni Safak”, under Agia Sofia there is a maze of tunnels, rooms and catacombs with an overall length of one kilometer Professor Hassan Firat Dekeer, who is a member of a committee of scientists overseeing the temple, said there has been a study of architectural depiction of Saint Sophia’s basements about five years ago. CORVERSE As quoted in the report, some points of the underground structures are modern with the temple, the construction of which was completed in 537 AD. But there are also points considered earlier by the structure of the temple. “The underground beauties and archaeological findings of Saint Sophia, which have been neglected for centuries, will be presented to the public,” Dekeer said. Cleanup work, as Dicker said, will last a year. The current effort, as explained by them, is more complete and long-term than the previous ones and added that it will increase even more “interest and love for Saint Sophia”.
