Afghanistan: The Taliban say the UN has promised to help

Top Taliban leaders met in Kabul on Sunday with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, who promised them that aid to the Afghan people would continue. Suhail Sahin.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the head of the Taliban’s political bureau, and other officials have met with Mr. Griffiths as Afghanistan faces a potentially catastrophic humanitarian crisis due to prolonged drought and economic collapse.

Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries in the world, is plunged into crisis as multibillion-dollar international aid is cut off after the collapse of the Western-backed government and the military domination of the Taliban in mid-August.
